Christians are always a curiosity. People remain covered by a veil that blinds them to the truth until they step out in faith and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. But once that single step of faith happens, like Paul, the scales fall from their eyes and the scriptures begin to open to their minds by the power of His Spirit within them. Then they understand. Until then, Christians remain an enigma.

Putting God off is making a choice. Each time you say no to the prompting of His Spirit it becomes easier to ignore His calling. He won’t plead with you or beg you. It’s your choice to follow Him. Just know the stakes are high. The temporary pleasure you might gain in putting Him off does not compare to the everlasting joy you’ll have with Him. All around you will one day pass away. Nothing you have will remain except the relationship you have with Him.

summary

Covenants are two-way streets. Contracts between two people. Both have requirements to fulfill to make the covenant binding. God's covenants are pretty one-sided, though. They do have an if clause in them, but if we give ourselves to Him, He provides everything else. It's not a fair deal on His part, but He loves us so much, He is willing to do the work, provide the best, redeem our souls, and do everything to support us and keep us. All He wants in return is for us to make Him the focus of our worship and adoration.

summary

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to forget the role God plays in your life. It’s easy to go through life and never see where His intervention makes a difference in your circumstances. But I urge you to stop and take time to meditate on Him. Put a pen and paper in front of you and list the ways He helps you each day. Think of the events in which you see His hand at work. Understand that He is God and loves you more than you can know. Begin to recognize the everlasting love He has for you that never fails.

summary

David was not a sweet, little shepherd boy, but a mighty warrior. He understood the safety and security of fortresses and the strength of armies. The 24th Psalm gives us a glimpse of his meditation on God, his creation, and his ability to protect those who honor him when he invites them into their lives. When we let God take charge of our lives and truly be Lord of our lives, we cannot fail because God cannot fail. Having him on our side means we win...every time.

Paul began his final journey to Jerusalem and knew he would never see his friends in some of the churches he established in his mission trips. This scene, as he met the elders from Ephesus, shows us how important Paul's legacy was to him. God had given him a task to complete and he worked hard to make sure it got done. All of us have tasks God wants us to complete and a legacy to leave behind. We all influence a lot more people than we think we do. Take the time to discover God's plan for you and then go and get it done.

summary

Not many people think much about the third commandment God gave Moses. It says we are not to take his name in vain, or misuse it, or dishonor it. Names in the ancient orient meant much more than they do today at a time when people seem to just put syllables together in any order that makes sense (or not). God made examples of some who misused his name in the story of Sceva's sons. One day all who misuse and profane his name will suffer the consequences of breaking God's command. Being stripped naked, beaten, and running through the streets naked will seem like time-out compared to what an eternity separated from God will be like. Be careful of his name.

summary

Satan probably has a heyday every time he sees "Christians" squabbling with each other over the petty differences we think are so monumental between us. The divides he has created that has grown hundreds, if not thousands of denominations and shades of doctrines are just outrageous to the non-believer. Just as Gallio proclaimed when the Jews from the synagogue brought Paul in front of his court, those around us think we act like little kids that can't get along. It's time to grow up and do what Christ told us to do and love each other.

summary

Everyone who encounters God's word has one of two choices to make. He must either choose to follow God and determine to live God's plan for his life and, therefore, gain eternal life through believing in his son, Jesus, for the forgiveness of his sins. Or he can refuse to allow God to direct his life and find himself woefully short when the day of reconning comes at judgment. We all have the choice, but like those that met Paul and Silas, we also tend to drag many with us. Don't make the wrong choice.

summary

What ever happened to worship services that no one wanted to leave? God wants us so engaged in our worship and his presence in our worship that we lose sight of everything else. The example we have in today's scripture with Paul and Silas in the prison is the kind of worship God really wants from us. People so enthralled with his presence they prefer to remain in jail with him than freedom from their physical chains. That's the kind of worship God wants to see in our churches. But it takes more than just showing up at service time. It takes a congregation ready to create a relationship with him on an individual basis before we will see that kind of phenomena in our churches again. It's time we accept the task.
