Matthew 19:26

devotional summary

We sure try to save ourselves, though, don’t we? We try to buyour way into heaven by giving tokens of material goods. We think ifwe give enough to a church and get our name on a pew or the wing ofchurch or maybe on the wing of a hospital it will earn us that spotin the kingdom. It’s kind of foolish to think that way, though.Take a look around. How much would it cost to buy the ocean andeverything in it? That belongs to God, so does your wing of thehospital impress Him?

Do you know how much gold has been dug out of the earth? Ifyou’ve never thought about it, it’s not quite enough to fill anOlympic swimming pool. That’s all. Men have been pulling gold outof the ground for centuries and that’s all they’ve found. So howmuch of that Olympic swimming pool sized lump of gold do you own?Do you think that impresses God? I guess not. So buying your way, just can’t save you, can it. There’s nothing you can give God inmaterial goods that could impress Him.

So how about something you could do. Is it some good deed youcould do that could get you into heaven? What could it be? What actcould you perform that could impress God enough to win yoursalvation? The answer is nothing. He has seen it all and peoplehave tried everything to try to assauge the guilt of sin they carrywith them from their youth. No one has found the cure in goodworks. Every prophet, every preacher, every priest has talked aboutit. When you compare what we can do with what God can do, what canwe do that would impress Him? Again, the answer is nothing.
