Today's Scripture Focus

Matthew 19:23-24

devotional summary

Jesus says it’s hard for the wealthy to find their way to heavenbecause they find it hard to let go. They forget the materialthings of life are meaningless. The world tells us they are soimportant. We work so hard and at some point we have enough toretire and enjoy the remainder of life in some semblance of rest. But it doesn’t work. We can’t take any of it with us. And when ourhealth runs out near the end of life, what good are all thosethings? Solomon talks about those days when sounds are muffled andsight is dimmed. Life drags on until we take our last breath. Ithappens to the poor and it happens to the rich.

The rich think they can prolong life by searching out the rightdoctor, the right medicines, the right elixir, the right cure. Theycan’t. Only God knows the day or the time your last breath willcome and nothing you can do can change that. Your riches or yourpoverty cannot change the number of your days. God gives us thosedays and He can take them away. He allows us to be stewards of Hisproperty. He can also take that away just as quickly as well. Askthe executives at Enron. They thought they were invincible. It tookjust a few words in the right place and their empire came crashingdown.

It’s all His, give it to Him, He lets us enjoy it while we’rehere, but don’t hang on too tightly. You might begin to think likethe young man who went away sad. He thought he was wealthy. But washe really? Where is your treasure?
